An RV is a “home on wheels” and owning one is a dream come true for many Americans. It opens up so many possibilities. You have the freedom to travel to new places, enjoy the spectacular scenery and have fun camping or roaming the byways and highways at your leisure.
Your home and your recreational vehicle are the two biggest financial investments you make. Both of them represent your family and your lifestyle and are like a reward for all the dedication and hard work you put in. So, if you are planning to buy an RV, it is imperative to understand why you need insurance and what type of insurance you need in order to make an informed decision.
Why Do You Need RV Insurance?
There are four main reasons why it is important to have specialized RV coverage for your motorhome:
- State Requirements: All states require a minimum amount of liability insurance for RVs. Some states may even have additional coverage.
- Personal Protection: RV coverage protects your financial assets if you are involved in an accident that causes injury, fatality or damage to property. Such situations can land you in bankruptcy and an RV insurance can prevent that from happening.
- Investment Protection: RVs do not come cheap. Purchasing an RV insurance ensures that your investment is properly protected. You do not need to end up with a totaled recreational vehicle while still paying your bank, as Optional Full Replacement coverage can help you in this situation.
- It is a common myth that the same insurance that protects your home or auto adequately covers your RV. Your RV is both a home and a vehicle so it requires specialized insurance to provide the right type of coverage.
The Basic RV Insurance Types Coverages.
There are five types of standard coverage that apply both for RVs and other vehicles- Liability, Collision, Comprehensive, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist, and Medical Payments.
- Liability Coverage: This is required in most states. It helps pay for costs related to damages and injuries to others if you are responsible for the accident.
- Collision Coverage: This coverage will pay for damage to your RV or motorhome when you collide with another vehicle or a non-living object like a pole, wall, fence etc. It will pay the costs regardless of who is at fault. Collision coverage also covers RV or motorhome rollovers.
- Comprehensive Coverage: It is also called “other than collision” coverage. This will cover your RV for things outside collision. If you use your motorhome frequently or live in it you may want to consider Comprehensive Coverage which will protect you from:
- Vandalism or malicious mischief
- Fire
- Impact with an animal (including a bird)
- Earthquake or Explosion
- Theft or Larceny
- Windstorm, Water, Hail, or Flood
- Other Natural Disasters.
- Falling objects or Missiles
- Riot or Civil Commotion
- Breakage of glass(not caused by collision)
- Uninsured/ Underinsured Motorist Coverage: This RV coverage works the same way as your traditional auto-insurance policy. It helps protect you and your passengers when a driver without insurance (Uninsured Motorist – UM) or one without enough insurance (Underinsured Motorist – UIM) hits your RV. This coverage may also protect you if you are a victim of a hit-and-run accident. Each state has its own uninsured/underinsured motorist laws and coverage is subject to the policy coverage limits and provisions. These coverages may be split or combined.
- Medical Payment Coverage: This coverage is optional and covers medical expenses for you, your family and any passenger if your RV is involved in an accident. It may be used regardless as to who is at fault.
All policies do not cover all of the above loses, so you should be sure to understand what is particularly included in your Comprehensive policy
Optional RV Insurance Coverages.
You can customize your coverage with a number of options. However, some of the optional coverages are subject to company approval or may not be available in all states.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This is an expanded version of Medical payments (described above).Besides, paying for medical expenses for you, your family, and any passenger in the event of a covered accident, it may (in some states) also cover the value of lost wages, lost services to your family, and funeral expenses. It is only available in the few “no-fault’ states and is required coverage in some of those states.
Vacation Liability Coverage: It is also known as Campsite Liability Coverage. It provides liability protection if an accident happens when you are parked and using your motorhome as a vacation residence (typically seasonally or weeks at a time)
Total Loss Replacement Coverage: If your RV is destroyed by a covered loss or stolen the insurance company will provide a brand new replacement of a similar kind and quality.
This coverage may usually be purchased in the first two model years of the RV. The Total Loss Replacement coverage will reimburse you with the full original price of your motorhome only if the loss occurs in the first five model years. After five years the coverage will revert to Purchase Price Guarantee coverage. This means the insurance company will pay you the original purchase price towards the cost of another RV.
Emergency Expense Coverage: This unique coverage can help cover the cost of lodging and transportation if your RV is damaged or destroyed by a covered loss more than 50 miles from home.
Personal Property Coverage: This is also known as Contents Coverage. It helps to protect your important personal belongings (computers, clothing, electronics, cameras, jewelry, tools, golf clubs, firearms, etc.) from damage, destruction or theft. Similarly, you could consider insuring your costly additions to your RV like a satellite dish, awning or grill.
Roadside Assistance: An additional 24/7 Emergency Roadside Assistance coverage provides towing to the nearest qualified repair facility and pays for necessary labor if your RV breaks down from things like:
- Mechanical or electrical breakdown
- Battery failure
- Flat tire
- Lock-out
- Insufficient supply of fuel oil, water, or other fluids
- Lockout, or Lost/Stolen Keys
- Stuck in snow, mud, water, or sand within 100 feet of the roadway.
Full-Timer Coverage: This policy will provide liability coverage very similar to a homeowners’ insurance policy. It will protect covered losses when your RV is parked and used as a dwelling for extended periods of time. This coverage includes personal liability coverage and helps to pay for property damage and bodily injury in the event of an accident for which you are held liable. It will also usually cover medical costs for people insured in or around the RV and emergency coverage.
