Riding a motorcycle is exhilarating. Lane splitting to get around traffic jams and enjoying the summer ride is some of the benefits. But it is also dangerous as you never know what might be around the bend. Bikers risk costly and fatal injuries in the event of a collision.

If your bike or scooter is your main transportation, your weekend ride or stored away in the winter, it is important to make sure that you and your bike is covered from headlight to tail light. Choosing the right insurance policy is very much like choosing the right bike and the general recommendation is that it should fit your needs, lifestyle, and budget.

Like auto insurance, motorcycle insurance requirements differ from state to state. In some states, you will not be able to buy a bike without proof of motorcycle insurance. Besides, if you get a ticket for not having motorcycle insurance it will be expensive. Most states require that you carry a minimum amount of liability coverage, to ensure that you can pay for bodily injuries and property damages in case of a serious accident.

However, it is to be noted that state-required liability insurance will not cover your own injuries and property damage. To fully protect yourself and your passengers you should purchase additional insurance.

Liability insurance

Liability coverage is mandatory in most states and every motorcyclist must carry some small amount of liability coverage. It covers “property damage” as well as “body injury”.

  • Property damage: It will cover you for damage that you cause to the property of another person in the event that you are at fault in an accident. It includes the cost to replace or repair the vehicle and other personal property that may have been damaged in an accident.
  • Bodily Injury: It will cover the damages you cause to another person if you are at fault for the accident. It includes a wide array of accident-related expenses like doctor’s visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, home health care, lost wages etc.
  • Guest passenger liability: This covers anyone riding pillion. But all liability policies do not automatically cover passenger injuries. So, you must check your policy to ensure that your passenger injuries are covered. If not, you will have to purchase additional coverage as per your state laws and insurance company.

Comprehensive and Collision Coverage

  • Collision Coverage: This cover helps pay for repairs and replacement of your motorcycle or scooter if you are involved in an accident.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: This pays for damages caused due to incidents such as theft, fire or vandalism. It may help pay for replacement or repairs like collision coverage.

Both types of coverage will pay for damages minus your deductibles and usually covers the book value of the motorcycle. Most comprehensive and collision coverages will cover only the standard parts of your motorcycle. So, you should look to obtain additional or optional equipment coverage for any added accessories like chrome parts, sidecars or a custom paint job.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage:

This will help you pay for repairs to your bike if it is hit by a driver who does not have insurance or does not have enough coverage. It will cover the related repair costs. Not all states require this type of insurance.

Medical Payments:

It covers the cost of certain necessary medical expenses that you and any passenger may require as the result of an accident. It covers these expenses regardless of who is at fault and can also be used to pay the deductible on your health insurance.

Other Types of Coverage

  • New bike replacement.
  • Total loss coverage.
  • Optional equipment coverage.
  • Trip interruption coverage.
  • Towing and labor coverage.

Add-on protection & coverage

  • Better Bike Replacement
  • Accessory Coverage
  • 24-Hour Roadside Assistance
